Industry Research

Demi Lovato released her documentary- 'Stay Strong'- in March 2012. It was shown on the channel MTV and a lot of buzz and excitement was created around it. The stereotypical audience associated with MTV is young-adult demographic; even though the company does state that their target audience ranges from 12-34 we do think the peak age of their viewers are ranged from 14-18.  The target audience are on average very interested in music; it can range in genres from pop to rock, which is very similar to the target audience we are trying to aim at.

Ed Sheeran relesed his documentary 'Nine days and nights of Ed Sheeran' in 2014 which was too released on MTV channels. It was a behind the scenes documentary about his life on the road whilst touring. It attracts a similar audience to that of Demi's documentary as both artists are from the same generation. However I think because Ed Sheeran's music is more indie pop, the audience attracted to them documentary will be often fans of his therefore will be more interested to indie pop rather than pop-which is more Demi Lovato.

Educating Yorkshire attracts a similar target audience as the type we desire to attract. This documentary is shown in the evening and on Channel 4. We felt like this documentary suited Channel 4 as it has this family element to it even though it is not necessarily for all ages due to strong language and poor behaviour. It is still more aimed at teenagers though. As a group we will have to decide whether we would want to have our documentary shown on somewhere like channel 4 where the overall audience is more broad and normally aimed at adults due to the vast range of adult documentaries. Or should we go for a channel that has a narrower audience such as MTV because it has a narrower audience nevertheless a lot of people tune in to watch it therefore we have more of an easier chance of our target audience being directly targeted.
